Dag 2 – Preparationer i Lissabon

Dag 2 -Press och förberedelser inför avfärd
En heldag av möten, genomgångar och intervjuer! Kapten väckte mig på morgonen och 15 min senare hade vi morgonmöte.
Nu börjar det kännas på riktigt riktigt…
Efter frukosten gick några av oss iväg till en presskonferens med nationell media, där både tv, radio och tidningar var på plats! Grymt imponerad av det massmediala engagemanget. Det är lätt att glömma när en bor i Sverige, att i resten av världen bryr sig faktiskt pressen om annat än bara melodifestival, sport och kungafamiljer.
Mitt under presskonferensen dök parlamentsledamoten Bruno Dias upp och gav sitt och den Portugisiska regeringens stöd till Ship to Gaza. Han berättade även om den nyligen bildade parlamentariska gruppen för Vänskap mellan Portugal-Palestine. Syftet är att lyfta Palestinafrågan i de olika politiska rummen samt inkludera Palestina i den politiska agendan. Mycket glädjande nyheter. En undrar såklart när den svenska regeringen ska agera och stå upp för Gazas folk…
En gemensam lunch avnjöts ombord på Al Awda, anordnat av den lokala palestinagruppen. Vi är så väldigt många och vi representerar över 15 olika nationaliteter, bara ombord på dessa två båtar. Utöver det finns det Ground Crew bestående av människor som flyger in från olika länder för att tillsammans med dom lokala eldsjälarna hjälpa till och stödja med allt det praktiska runt om.
Som James från Freedom Flotilla Coalition sa vid presskonferensen:
”There are more and more people from all over the world who wants to be onboard Ship to Gaza and the Freedom Flotilla, and even though there’s only room for a few of us onboard, there’s no limit on how many participants and crew members we can have on land. So take action and join the cause, follow the ships from land, follow us from the screens of your computer, talk and share the knowledge, raise awareness. Everybody can do something”
Resten av dagen gick till ytterligare intervjuer med press samt ett mycket rörande arrangemang av en lokal gräsrotsorganisation dit vi blev inbjudna till samtal med frågestund följt av en underbart god hemmalagad middag. Under middagen startades en spontan och välbehövlig insamling av dom som var närvarande vilket utökade den något ansträngda seglarkassan inför vår vidare färd. Människors intresse och engagemang är djupt rörande och ger oss alla kraft och motivation till att fortsätta. Så tro mig när jag skriver att allt ert stöd är livsviktigt för oss alla ombord.
Med bara några få timmar kvar till avfärd är det dags för mig att försöka lugna nerverna och lura mig själv till sömns. Imorgon kl 5 börjar mitt första arbetspass ombord och kl 7 lämnar vi hamnen i Cascais för att fortsätta vår färd mot Gaza. Nästa stopp blir i Cadiz, dit vi förväntas anlända måndagmorgon.

Day 2 -Press and preparation before departure
A whole day of meetings, procedures and interviews! The captain woke me up in the morning and 15 minutes later we had the morning meeting.
Now it starts to feel really real…
After breakfast some of us went off to a press conference with the national media. Both TV, radio and newspapers were there! Deeply impressed by the level of engagement by mass media. It’s easy to forget when you live in Sweden, that in the rest of the world the press cares about other things than the Eurovision song contest, sport and the royal family.
The parliamentary representative Bruno Dias made an appearance in the middle of the press conference to give his support, and the support of the Portuguese government for Ship to Gaza. He also talked about the recently created parliamentary group for friendship between Portugal and Palestine. Their purpose is to bring forward the Palestine question in different political areas and to include Palestine in political agendas. Very good news. One wonders when the Swedish government is going to act and take a real stand for the people of Gaza…
We enjoyed lunch on board Al Awda, organised by the local Palestine group, and it became clear to me how many of us we are and that together, we represent more than 15 different nationalities, just on board these two boats. Besides that there is the Ground Support which consist of different people flying in from different countries to help and give support together with the local groups with all of the practical issues surrounding the journey.

The rest of the day was spent giving more interviews with the press and a very moving arrangement from a local grass roots organisation where we were invited for conversation and questions followed by a fantastic homemade dinner. During the dinner a much needed collection started spontaneously by those present which added to our somewhat strained sailing budget for the rest of the journey. People’s interest and involvement is deeply moving and gives us all the power and motivation to continue. So believe me when I say that your support is vital for all of us on board.
With just a few hours left before departure, it’s time for me to try to calm my nerves and trick myself into falling asleep. My first work shift on board starts at 5 am tomorrow and we leave the harbour at Cascais at 7 am to continue travelling towards Gaza. Our next stop will be in Cadiz, where we expect to arrive on Monday morning.
